Making a difference in Redruth
The Youth Sports Awards have, over the past seventeen years, donated over £283,000 worth of kit and equipment to eligible sports clubs in the Redruth area. The clubs supported comprise total memberships of well over 2400 under 18s. The Awards are held annually. Applications usually open in December and close at the end of February.
Applications for the 2024 scheme will open in December 2023.

‘Do one thing. If we all do one thing, what a difference we can make in our community’. That was the closing message from RNLI’s South West Water Safety Lead to Redruth’s young sportspeople in a speech at Redruth Charity Trust’s 18th Youth Sports Award presentation on Sunday 14th May. Steve Instance first joined the RNLI in 2001 to set up their beach rescue division. He has a passion for life saving, first inspired as a young member of Portreath Surf Life Saving Club, that consumes his whole day; in his work, he focuses on raising awareness about water safety and teaching vital skills to prevent drowning around the coast, and all his free time is spent at his Surf Life Saving Club. Steve described himself as a Redruth boy; he recalled growing up in Pool, and his parents’ sporting influences of swimming and rugby, alternating through the seasons in his community. Steve stressed the importance of sport in bringing people together and impressed on the children the benefits that sport can have on their future career paths in working together, sharing values and respect, whilst also urging them to consider how they can make a difference in Redruth. Steve joined Chris Hailey, Chair of Redruth Charity Trust, to present twenty thousands pounds worth of new equipment and apparel to 21 sports clubs in the Redruth district with an under-18 membership, through the Youth Sports Awards programme. Over 200 members and representatives from the clubs gathered for the presentation ceremony at Pool Academy, the first event of the Trust’s 30th anniversary year as a registered charity. A first for Redruth Charity Trust, this year’s event was filmed and streamed live, to share the celebration with club members, family and friends who couldn’t attend. The video is available to watch here: The new items requested by the 21 applying clubs were purchased by the Trust, via valued partner Cornish Granite Sports, and distributed on the night; these donations will benefit their members totalling 2855 under-18s in the Redruth district. The Trust awarded a spectacular trophy and £50 voucher to one nominated individual from each of the 21 clubs in this year’s scheme. Pool Academy Year-7 students provided refreshments, with a collection in memory of their friend who tragically died this year on his walk home from school. They are all providing a priceless service to their community, teaching and inspiring our community’s young people. I know Steve and his family well, through rugby and the community, and I was thrilled to invite him to share his experience of how sport can benefit every aspect of life to inspire our young people. ‘You can achieve anything when you work hard and enjoy yourself’. That was the message from Cornwall’s Chief Fire Officer to Redruth’s young sportspeople in a speech at Redruth Charity Trust’s 17th Youth Sports Award presentation on Sunday 27th March. One of only four female CFO’s in the UK, Kathryn Billing worked her way right up through Cornwall Fire & Rescue. She described growing up in Illogan and leaving Pool School without a career plan, but explained that it was her passion for sport that forged an understanding of the power of teamwork and has been a constant throughout her career. With numerous sporting achievements under her belt, individually and in teams, Kathryn conveyed to the young people that there are no barriers stopping them from seeking their goals. Kathryn joined Chris Hailey, Chair of Redruth Charity Trust, to present eighteen thousands pounds worth of new equipment and apparel to 18 sports clubs in the Redruth district with an under-18 membership, through the Youth Sports Awards programme. Nearly 200 members and representatives from the clubs gathered for the presentation ceremony at Redruth School. The Trustees were delighted that the 17th awards scheme was able to be back on schedule, after the previous two years had suffered delays, and delivered in early spring. The new items requested by the 18 applying clubs were purchased by the Trust, via valued partner Cornish Granite Sports, and distributed on the night; these donations will benefit 2400 under-18s in the Redruth district. Eighteen sports clubs received over fifteen thousand pounds worth of new equipment and apparel on Sunday 1st August at Redruth Charity Trust’s annual Youth Sports Awards ceremony. Delivery of the 16th scheme may have been three months later than usual due to the pandemic, but the Trust was delighted that the 2021 awards were able to be presented in person. Representatives from 18 clubs gathered to receive their new kit, worth over £15,000 trade cost; these donations will benefit 2400 under-18 club members in the Redruth district. Chris Hailey, Chair of Redruth Charity Trust, said: “It has been a challenge to make this year’s awards happen, with supplier delays and government restrictions on gathering, but we were determined. The club volunteers themselves have faced huge challenges and continued to deliver engagement to their members during the pandemic, so it was our duty to work as hard as possible to help their recovery with vital new kit and equipment.“The young people in our district need sport now, more than ever, to re-energise and re-build after a period of hiatus and isolation. Over the last sixteen years, we have donated hundreds of thousands of pounds in kit – the Trust continues to make a difference and support youth development through sport.“The presentation evening, and the run up to it, involves a lot of work from the Trust team, but more so from Paul Hancock of Granite Sports, our procurement partner. We thank him for his continued commitment to supporting the Trust and we also extend our thanks to Redruth School for hosting the awards evening.” In addition to donating equipment, the Youth Sports Awards also celebrate individual athletes who have shown improvement in performance, attitude or effort in the previous year. The Trust awarded a medal and holdall full of kit to one nominated individual from each of the 18 clubs in this year’s scheme. A retiring collection was held for Redruth United FC, whose clubhouse had been vandalised this summer. £250 was collected, which the Trust rounded up to £300.
