This child protection safeguarding policy is designed specifically for Redruth Charity Trust (Charity No. 228447), reflecting its role in supporting youth sports, education, and community groups within the TR15 and TR16 districts.
Child Protection Safeguarding Policy: Redruth Charity Trust
1. Purpose and Scope
The purpose of this policy is to protect children and young people who receive any service from Redruth Charity Trust, including those participating in the Youth Sports Awards, Community Awards, and Fred Harris Education Awards.
This policy applies to all ten volunteer trustees, any future staff, and volunteers. For the purpose of this policy, a child is defined as anyone under the age of 18.
2. Our Commitment
Redruth Charity Trust believes that:
- Children and young people should never experience abuse of any kind.
- We have a responsibility to promote the welfare of all children and young people, to keep them safe and to practise in a way that protects them.
- All children, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation, have an equal right to protection from all types of harm or abuse.
3. Safer Recruitment and Grants
As a grant-making body that frequently awards funding to youth organisations, we will:
- Vetting: Ensure any trustees or volunteers in “regulated activity” with children undergo appropriate DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks.
- Grant Requirements: Require all clubs and societies applying for the Youth Sports Awards to provide evidence of their own robust safeguarding policies and designated welfare officers.
- Training: Ensure trustees are informed about safeguarding responsibilities and how to spot signs of abuse.
4. Code of Conduct for Awards and Events
When interacting with children during award ceremonies (such as at the Redruth Sports Awards) or club visits, our representatives must:
- Avoid being alone with a child.
- Always ensure children are accompanied by parents, guardians, or responsible adults from their school or sports club.
- Obtain written parental consent before taking or publishing photographs of children on our Instagram or Facebook pages.
5. Procedures for Reporting Concerns
If a trustee or volunteer becomes aware of a safeguarding concern (the “5 Rs”: Recognise, Respond, Report, Record, Refer):
- React: If a child is in immediate danger, call the Police (999).
- Report: Contact the Nominated Safeguarding Lead (to be appointed by the Trustees).
- Refer: If necessary, report concerns to Cornwall Council Children’s Services or the NSPCC Helpline (0808 800 5000).
- Record: Keep a factual, confidential record of the concern, following GDPR guidelines.
6. Governance and Review
The Board of Trustees is ultimately accountable for this policy. It will be reviewed annually (every March) or following any significant changes in legislation or internal incidents.
Adopted by Trustees 16 March 2026.
