Youth Sports Awards 2024

‘Work hard, surround yourself with good people and give it your all. There’s nothing better than sport’.

That was the message from GB athlete Piran Phillips to Redruth’s young sportspeople in a speech at Redruth Charity Trust’s 19th Youth Sports Award presentation on Sunday 21st April 2024.

Piran Phillips has been a member of the Great Britain Surf Life Saving Team for the past 2 years. He grew up in the Redruth district and had a very active youth in sport, a member of Redruth RFC Juniors, Carn Brea Helston Swimming Club and Portreath Surf Lifesaving Club. Now at University, Piran is not only continuing to complete internationally, he is working towards a career in sports journalism. Piran recounted to the audience his younger years trying many sports until he focused on ocean sports, the experience of competing abroad and for your county, and the intensive training regimen he follows. Piran’s advice to the children present, recalling he had sat in the audience of this awards evening many times himself, was to work hard and you will get the results you deserve.

Piran joined Chris Hailey, Chair of Redruth Charity Trust, to present twenty thousand pounds worth of new equipment and apparel to 22 sports clubs in the Redruth district with an under-18 membership, through the Youth Sports Awards programme. More than 250 members and representatives from the clubs gathered for the presentation ceremony at Redruth School.

The event was filmed and streamed live, to share the celebration with club members, family and friends who couldn’t attend. The professional AV production in the room and online was provided by Cornwall Funeral Services. The video is available to watch here:

The new items requested by the 22 applying clubs were purchased by the Trust, via valued partner Cornish Granite Sports, and distributed on the night; these donations will benefit their members totalling over 3000 under-18s in the Redruth district.

Redruth Charity Trust extends its grateful thanks to the 27 local businesses that sponsor the Youth Sports Award programme, whose support has been crucial to this significant total investment and the Trust’s commitment to ‘Making a Difference in Redruth’.

In addition to donating equipment, the Youth Sports Awards also celebrate individual athletes who have shown improvement in performance, attitude or effort in the previous year.  The Trust awarded a spectacular trophy and £50 voucher to one nominated individual from each of the 22 clubs in this year’s scheme.

Redruth School students provided refreshments, with a collection for their Cambodia trip and a retiring collection raised £138.62 for Redruth Charity Trust.

Chris Hailey, Chair of Redruth Charity Trust, said:

“Last year marked significant milestones for our organisation, including our 30th Anniversary and my 20th year as Chairman, and this year we are thrilled to announce another significant milestone for the charity – Redruth Charity Trust has invested over £500,000 across our Youth Sport, Community, and Education programmes since 1993!

With the support of our dedicated sponsors, including two who have doubled their commitment this year, and the addition of new businesses, we’ve been able to expand our reach and impact. We’ve seen tangible progress through initiatives like increasing first aid support and promoting girls’ sports, and, as we move forward, we remain committed to our mission.

This presentation evening brought together 22 clubs from the Redruth district, all of which provide a valuable service to their community, teaching and inspiring our community’s young people. It is our pleasure to support that effort with the resources they need to thrive.

“Thank you from the trustees to Piran Phillips, our special guest, to Redruth School for hosting the evening, to our procurement partners, Cornish Granite Sports and Cornish Granite Medical, to Cornwall Funeral Service for the AV provision and of course all the Youth Sports Award sponsors.”
