2019 Youth Sports Awards

Twenty two sports clubs received over twenty thousand pounds worth of new equipment and apparel on Sunday 12th May at Redruth Charity Trust’s annual Youth Sports Awards ceremony.

The 2019 scheme saw a record number of clubs applying, and the highest value of kit awarded, at over £15,500 trade cost. The donations will benefit the clubs’ 2400 members in the Redruth district.

An audience of more than 300 club representatives heard James Milliner-Woodcock deliver the opening speech and present the awards. At just 30, James is already a RFU National Panel Referee, having started as a rugby ref only 6 years ago. Recounting his journey in rugby from player to referee, James urged the young people to ‘love what you do’.

Chris Hailey, Chair of Redruth Charity Trust, said:

“In fourteen years, we have donated hundreds of thousands of pounds in kit, which has made a difference to a generation and supported their development through sport.

“We were honoured to be joined by James Milliner-Woodcock as our guest speaker this year.  James described the role that mentors play in sport, supporting progress, suggesting new opportunities and sharing their passion.  The Youth Sports Awards support 22 clubs to do what they do best, but behind every club is a team of incredible volunteers. Their valuable contribution can’t be underestimated, and we thank them for making a difference to our young people, the future of our town.

“The ceremony, and the run up to it, involves a lot of work from the Trust team, but more so from Paul Hancock of Granite Sports, our procurement partner. We thank him for his continued commitment to supporting the Trust and we also extend our thanks to Pool Academy for hosting the awards evening.”

In addition to donating equipment, the Youth Sports Awards also celebrate individual athletes who have shown improvement in performance, attitude or effort in the previous year.  The Trust awarded a trophy and backpack full of kit to one nominated individual from each of the 22 clubs in this year’s scheme.

New apparel was also presented to Pool Academy and Redruth School.
